Ladies First

"Ladies first"
Died out long ago in London
And the latent feminist in me
Wouldn't mind at all
Except it extends to
Children, infirm, elderly
And anyone
Who might take up a seat on the bus

I will shove you and nudge you
And tread on your feet
I will even look you straight in the eye
Then push on by
I don't care that your load is heavy
Or that you were there first
I don't care that you're pregnant
Or tired, or wobbly on your feet
And just to top it off
I'll place my bag so it takes up an extra seat
Because my bag and I are more important
Than anything or anyone
And I feel ok, because it's the culture
I'm not the only one
