A Christmas Flood

The tidal surge, the rising flood
Means no turkey and no Xmas pud
No pretty lights upon the tree
We have no electricity
The freezers contents now defrosted
This could be the worst party ever hosted
No oven, tv, charge for ipad, phone
So much money spent, it's now all gone
The months of planning, such a mess
How will I entertain our guests
I'd planned so much for Xmas day
But perhaps we're better off this way?
No remote control based wine fuelled fight
With candles as our only light
The floods too high to take a walk
Nothing else to do but to sit and talk
Why did I spend such time and worry
Decembers days spent in a hurry
To create the perfect Yuletide fest
The pressure's on to be the best
But now were laughing at silly jokes
I give the fire another poke
Induce it to an inviting flame
Sat down in front to play a game
We're chatting, giggling, a real connection
A time of fun, with some reflection
And the twists and turns of Monopoly
Are helping me to slowly see
That Xmas is not for vain display
Tremendous feasts, mad light display
It's the simple things that make it real
It's a time to express the love you feel
And although there's money sadly wasted
And my Xmas pud was never tasted
I'd gladly swap it all again
And begrudgingly I thank the rain
